More functions and features in a limited space and growing demands on system availability are making switch mode power supplies increasingly important components. Not only must they ensure a reliable supply to the connected loads, they also have a significant impact on the system’s efficiency, service life and cost-effectiveness. When selecting a power supply unit, the key criteria are the output power, efficiency, size, user-friendliness and robustness.

The key aspect of modern switch mode power supplies

DC 24 V is the established standard in industrial automation and predominantly power Control systems, sensors, actuators and safety devices. The widespread availability of compatible components, combined with the safe voltage level, makes 24 V the first choice for conventional control and monitoring tasks.

However, there is growing interest in DC 48 V, wherever high power must be transmitted efficiently, for example in robotics, modular machinery, automated guided vehicle systems, or in IT and telecommunications. Thanks to the higher voltage, the current levels decrease, which reduces line losses and allows for smaller cable cross sections. This saves materials, improves energy efficiency and helps set up high-performance systems.

The power rating alone is not sufficient to assess a power supply unit. The crucial part is the combination of several characteristics.

High efficiency

Power supplies with efficiency levels of about 96 % significantly reduce energy losses and heat generation. This reduces the load on cooling systems, extends the service life of adjacent components and, in the long term, reduces maintenance and operating costs. This contributes to plant availability.

Compact design

Every millimetre counts in the control cabinet. As a result of the high power density, enclosures become smaller, which leaves more space for additional components or retrofit projects. Modern power semiconductors from gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) are making a significant contribution to this development.

Convenient installation and maintenance

Tool-free DIN rail mounting, push-in connection technology, clearly visible status LEDs and clear labelling reduce installation and servicing times. Due to shortages of skilled workers, these user-friendly solutions are becoming increasingly attractive.

Robustness in industrial applications

Switch mode power supplies must operate reliably even under difficult conditions. A wide input voltage range, high MTBF values, vibration resistance and international approvals ensure reliable operation across a variety of applications and markets.
